This summer at Kentwell Halls annual Tudor re-creation I spent two being gentry.
Ever since I started Kentwell I wanted to try being gentry. It’s the other half of Tudor life to me. I’ve always been poor, a normal person. A nobody. And I do love that, it’s the most fun I’ve ever had. But gentry is just as interesting.
I loved it. Everyone said I’d get so bored, but I didn’t. My friend was being my younger sister so I spent the day playing cards and chess and doing lessons with her.
I chose the two hottest days of the event to do it though. And that is the hottest costume I have ever been in. It’s so tight it’s hard to breathe sometimes. And as it wasn’t mine it didn’t quite fit right. But it was so beautiful.
We went to the fair and walked around, saw the gentry of the house. Watched one of our stewards win the wrestling. Got extremely hot.
Had a great time. Awkwardly smiled at people I “don’t” know 😉 .
And then did it all again the next day.
Although the next day we saw some people get arrested for being drunk and the such like (most un-seemly)… Although we only saw half as I had to chivvy away my “sister” after being quietly reminded it wasn’t really something I should be watching.
After returning to our encampent, on both days, we sat in the breeze and tried not to die of heat. I did love the gown, it was amazing, but so very hot.
I was actually really surprised I didn’t get bored, I’ve always looked at what they do and thought it was really boring. But I enjoyed it, I wouldn’t want to do it every day, but it was fun.
It’s harder being gentry. You have to be a real person, you can’t just make someone up. You have to know the background and who you’re related to. You have to know all this other stuff about whats happening in your life and it’s all very confusing.
Bridget was about to leave home to go and service someone in service to the Queen. Which is a very big deal as it would give her a place at court and is an amazing oportunity.
She was going to serve Lady Clinton, so she’d play chess with her and talk to her. And be her friend. And then Lady Clinton would do all this stuff for the Queen.
It’s been a while since I was Bridget now, and I’m honestly not sure whether I’ll ever do it again. I really did enjoy it, but it is hard work… And the gown was tight…
On a whole I really enjoyed it.
This weekend is Kentwell Halls Tudor High summer, I will be in the still room (*happy face*)
